Retro Sketches A Musical Director Remembers tells 40 coffee-table stories of encounters with celebrities from the world of music along with actresses from film, and television. Also included a writer of award-winning scripts, a producer of your favorite TV show, and never-told stories of bands, conductors, arrangers, and one non-music person with such a startling insight on life, it had to be included. Funny. Revealing. Thought-provoking

"I don't care if you don't dig me, I'm yours" - said six foot bass player of the first J.Snyder's band, Euphoria's Id, talking to Jackie (Kennedy).A book of sheer delight. Not just another sleazy rock memoirs hastily built on ever winning formula "Sex & drugs & rock'n'roll", but a collection of unusual short novels, written with elegance, finesse, a lot of decency and dry humor. If we'll remove the celebs, and replace them with ordinary names, we'll simply get a quality prose, a very enjoyable and pleasant reading. Forty stories (I wish it would be fifty or one hundred) covering "Who Is Who" in the showbiz (and not only) - Frank Zappa, Doobie Bros, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Chubby Checker...
If you are hooked to the golden era when the rock was born, when the rhythm was forged, and the genre was shaped, this book is for you. It comes straight from this mysterious, rebellious, controversial and creative 60s.
Jay Snyder should be better known (but he must write more!) to the reading public*, although he needs no introduction as a musician - he is the mastermind and the driving force behind cult act "Fate", which recorded only one album - "Sgt.Death" Sgt Death, a most convincing proof of the existence of noosphere (underrated Fate, a real artifact of American music heritage, shared the same moods and music ideas as the Doors, Fraction - Moon Blood or Blessed End Movin' On).
Another reason I do strongly recommend to read the book is the language. Trust me, you'll learn many good words (the vocabulary exceeds 100 times or so the dictionary of a high-rank TV presenter or DJ), and even more good thoughts (much more than any brainless and ignorant music critic has).
Let's make the long story short - buy the book
* That's not the first venture of Mr Snyder into writing - Keyboard Results: Piano and Fundamentals for Everyone, Vol. 1, he wrote 2 (two) volumes! I tried to read, but it turned out to be a manual (and a very good one as professionals say)

Retro Sketches A Musical Director Remembers Jay Snyder 9780989215305 Books Reviews
Musical director and keyboard wizard Jay Snyder has done it all! In his retro-cool insider's look at the music and entertainment business, he takes you onstage, backstage and everywhere in between as he traverses a golden era of music. So perceptive of the passing scene. Feels like Snyder is talking to the reader at some after hours jazz club. "Retro Sketches" - is so much fun to read!
Anyone who came up as a "grunt" in the music biz trenches of the 70's and 80's in particular will relate to every word of this book.
The younger folks will dig it, too, although this world doesn't really exist anymore. It is also a bittersweet reminder of times gone by, where younger players could fall into world after world of different playing situations. The Musical Directors were always the guys who knew more than the rest of us, and sometimes gleefully dragged the rest of us with them into the pits of hell!! Always a hoot, and more than insightful, this is a must read for the former participants as well as the voyeurs of that eccentric, greasy, and hilarious universe.

Recently I was thrilled to receive RETRO SKETCHES A Musical Director Remembers ... written by my friend, MUSICAL DIRECTOR TO THE STARS, JAY SNYDER who sent me a copy of his coffee-stories book which is written in his inimitable style. In it he relates 40 interesting and amusing anecdotes of his experiences with celebrities and others over several decades.
Read about THE PLATTERS, BIG MAMA THORNTON, FRANK ZAPPA, FAME, HERMAN'S HERMITS, THE SINATRA ARRANGEMENT, DOOBIE BROS., ANDY WILLIAMS, THE TONIGHT SHOW, THE KENNEDYS, TONY ORLANDO, KAREN BLACK, GOLDIE HAWN....and so much more. Quick and easy to read. Highly recommended!! )

Long time customer Jay Snyder rode the British Invasion wave with his groups Euphoria's ID and Fate, has played keyboards with everyone from Big Mama Thornton to Tony Orlando and then went on to work as a musical director in film and television for several decades. He has a whimsical new memoir out with lots of behind the scenes stories and photos featuring everyone from the green alien goddess of the original Star Trek series to the Kennedys. Check it out on
Never mind that snyder has hung out with some of the greats (big mama thorton, the tonight show band, chubby checker, the doobie bros). At the end of the day it's his insight into those characters and himself that makes this book so precious. With the glamour peeled away it's life as usual we can all relate to - those frustrations, hardships, and inspirations that mock or drive us on our way to glory. Quick and easy reading each sketch closes with snyder reflecting on the big picture. The simple truths he serves up leave us hankering for more. Bon appetit!
Just having the opportunity to go back in time is reason enough to read this book. It instantly put a smile on my face, remembering what it was like for ordinary human beings (like Jay Snyder from Maine, and me from the Bronx) along with so many others, to walk through numerous open doors allowing us the opportunity to pursue our dreams.
Jay's trips backstage fill in many of the blanks that we all knew were there and had me laughing out loud. Even if you were just one of the hundreds of thousands that crowded together to hear these songs, you will understand that when I turned the page to see the mention of John Lennon's "Imagine" my laughter turned into tears, and I felt so many emotions rise to the surface. How fortunate we were to live in the age of opportunity.
I'm hoping that the Millennial generation will find inspiration here for their own methods of expression, by remembering that our country was built on equal opportunity for all. I hope that they will be inspired to stand up for their rights to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, and remember that music is one of the pathways to freedom.
